In oktober 1945 bracht de Dutch Overseas Broadcasting Station P C J te Hilversum de brochure ''The Canadian Army in Holland'' uit voor Canadese soldaten die in Nederland waren gestationeerd. De brochure bestaat uit 16 cartoons getekend door Jan Nieuwenhuys, die destijds werkte in de YMCA ''Maple Leaf Club'' aan de 's-Gravelandseweg te Hilversum. De cartoons waren allemaal geschetste situaties die Canadese soldaten veelal meegemaakt zullen hebben tijdens hun aanwezigheid in Nederland.

Gooiland theater
Op één van de cartoons staat het Gooiland theater afgebeeld. Het Gooiland was een bekende plek onder Canadese soldaten aangezien hier veel voorstellingen draaiden.

Good Day Canadians!
Or should we just say - ''Daag''', the little word you learned the first day you crossed our border, chasing the Krauts to where they came from. And Cheers again, boys, for having done such a wonderful job!
Now ''this Army'' - your Army, has seen many pictures, drawings and cartoons by your fine artists, who accompanied you on the path of war. But since variety is the spice of life, this book of gay pictures and words will give you an idea of how a young and promising Dutch artist ''outside looking in'' sees the boys from Canada.
So here is our bright youngster Jan Nieuwenhuys, special artist for the famous YMCA ''Maple Leaf Club'' of Hilversum, showing you in 30 mirthful pages of colour a Cavalcade of Canadians in the Netherlands. I hope you will agree he hit the spot when he went to work with crayon and brush, getting your happy liberation days amongst a grateful people.
Soon youwill all be home again in your great cities or on the wide open spaces of your mighty land. And while we dread the parting of our liberators, we sincerely hope that Jan Nieuwenhuys with his book of merry drwings of the Canadian GI's in Holland will bring and continue to bring pleasant memories and many a smile of the days when you happily said ''Daag'' to the Dutch.

Eind 1945 heeft de uitgeverij De La Mar de cartoons herdrukt om als relatiegeschenk uit te delen aan hun klanten. Deze druk heeft een ander voorwoord en is op ander papier gedrukt.

Jan Nieuwenhuys is mijn vader. Hij heeft nog meer cartoons gemaakt. Een deel daarvan heb ik geschonken aan Het Vrijheidsmuseum in Groesbeek.
Mijn vader maakte ook deel uit van een verzetsgroep. Ook van deze verzetsgroep maakte hij een cartoon.
